Englewood knows and respects Mother Nature, and with this in mind, has invested time, money and energy into developing its natural resources in both Sarasota and Charlotte counties.
In Sarasota County, along the inland coastline of Lemon Bay, are two such parks, Indian Mound Park and Lemon Bay Park. Indian Mound Park is a historic site of the Calusa Indians, who once lived on the shores of Lemon Bay. The Indian mound at the park has been found to have artifacts dating back to 400 B.C. This scenic park also has a historic nature trail, pavilion, picnic tables, and a public boat ramp, with parking facilities.
The Lemon Bay Park and Environmental Center also hugs the coastline of Lemon Bay. This relatively new center is home to nature displays, a butterfly garden, nature trails and picnic sites overlooking the bay.
Guided walks through the nature trails, classes and special events celebrating Englewood's affair with Mother Nature are homogenous to Lemon Bay Park and Environmental Center. This is a place to put one's self into perspective in the bigger than life scheme of existence.
On the Charlotte County side of Englewood is Cedar Point Environmental Center, an environmentally sensitive area of 88 acres, dedicated to the natural lifestyles of the inhabitants of the preserve. This center also has guided walks with field professionals who can answer any question pertaining to the center and its environmental goals.
Whether it be on the beach, a back yard, a nature preserve, or along the road, in Englewood, one may observe at just about any time, pelicans, herons, egrets, cormorants, ibis and sea gulls, flying in the air or resting on the water or land.
